International CollegeVSCollege of Resources and EnvironmentIn the afternoon of October 15, the first round of the "2022 International College Football Friendly Match" kicked off in the football field of the Yanqi Lake East Campus. Nearly 30 players from the International College (IC) and the College of Resources and Environment participated in the game, which consisted of three sessions of 30 minutes each.At 1:30 pm, players from both sides, led by the referees, entered into the field at a brisk pace and in full spirit. They high-fived each other and greeted the referees and the crowd. Then, all of them entered the pitch and stood waiting for the game to start. At the whistle, the IC team kicked off first, and players from both teams quickly got into the swing of things. IC players kept attacking actively and had a number of threatening shots on goal within the first ten minutes. As both sides got to know each other better, the game became increasingly intense. Halfway through the first session, IC players cooperated perfectly and attacked decisively, scoring the first goal of the game. Our players then worked harder and continued to carry out a number of powerful attacks. Finally, at the end of the first session, IC took a temporary lead with a score of 1:0.       After a short break, the second session kicked off, whose tempo was significantly faster than the first one, with both teams attacking more often and defending more strongly. IC players kept their high spirits and continued to attack, bringing the ball near the opponent's goal several times and putting great pressure on them. On one occasion when the ball was served, an IC player seized the right opportunity to shoot the ball into the goal just as it entered the field. This wonderful goal won a cheer from the crowd and made our players even more dynamic, taking the initiative on the field throughout the game.In the last session of the match, IC players continued to perform brilliantly and wined applause and cheers with their accurate passing, excellent crossing and outstanding defending. With tacit cooperation, IC scored again, further extending the score and keeping it until the end of the game. Finally, IC won the friendly match with a score of 3:0.At the end of the match, referees and players from the College of Resources and Environment congratulated IC players, who also expressed their gratitude.During the friendly match, IC players showed good spirit, who adhered to the principle of "friendship first, competition second". World is moving towards Peace due to China’s development
World is moving towards Peace due to China’s development

Each year on October 1st, China celebrates its National Day with many widely publicized events, showing national pride and commemorating one's nation on its National Day, symbolized with a five-star red flag. The five-star red flag symbolizes the great People's Republic of China. On National Day, China is decorated with five-star red flags. The five–star flags hanging everywhere made the vast number of cadres and crowds feel a strong celebratory atmosphere. Also, it showed the spirit of the new era, which is uplifting, hard work, responsibility, and unremitting struggle. Today, the People's Republic of China will celebrate its 74th anniversary. Chinese national holidays are celebrated from October 1-7, the week known as "Golden Week".When talking about National Day, it is impossible to ignore the significance of Tiananmen Square. Tiananmen Square is one of the largest squares in the world, located on the south side of Chang'an Avenue, on the traditional central axis of Beijing city. Every year on October 1st, in the early morning, the five-star red flag-raising ceremony in Tiananmen Square was around the flagpole. That's an exciting movement; people of all colors gather in Tiananmen Square to witness this beautiful scenery. During the national holidays, the schools arranged handcrafted paper painting activities for "loving the motherland and welcoming the national day" to strengthen students' patriotic education and enhance students' national awareness.Difference between dependent and independent. Independent is quality, and a dependent is an option. A person's character and his ability to form genuine connections with others are both strengthened by his pursuit of self-actualization. In today's interdependent global community, ensuring a country's or state's security is of utmost importance. National security in the modern day is not confined to just stockpiling firearms, nukes, missiles, etc. However, this protection goes beyond financial and extends to environmental and various other types of safety. A detailed list of factors related to security, including military security, economic security, border security, demographic security, security against natural disasters, energy, food, environmental, ethnic, and geo-strategic security.Throughout history, many conflicts have been fought over control of territory, rights, and freedom. These factors affect the atmosphere of peace. If China is concerned about strengthening national security, it must take a more proactive role than in the past and strengthen its international collaboration. The current changes in global power dynamics from one state to another in the 21st century will exacerbate concerns about foreign policy for developed and developing nations. But as we all know, the 19th century was a British century, the 20th century was considered the American century, and the 21st century is primarily believed to be a Chinese century. It is time for China to realize its full potential.I wish you all good health, a prosperous career, good luck, and peace. Happy National Day! In 2019, UCAS students in historic Tiananmen Square.Author Info:Muhammad Adnan, PhD Student, 2022 ANSOState Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry SKLEGInstitute of Geochemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences IGCASUniversity of Chinese Academy of Sciences UCAS

A culturally rich and unforgettable experience in China
A culturally rich and unforgettable experience in China
by admin - Sep 16, 2022

My name is Muhammad Adnan. I am from KPK, Pakistan one of the richest areas in natural resources but also one of the most deprived areas regarding facilities. Pakistan and China have been close friends for many years. Such long-standing relationship has been beneficial for both sides. Pak-China ties have been described as higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the oceans, stronger than steel, dearer than the eyesight, and sweeter than honey. The foundation of this bilateral relationship is a shared commitment to uphold and advance common interests and values. I was pleased and very satisfied after being selected for the Belt and Road Master Fellowship Programme (BRI) award. Now, I live in China. In August 2019, I became a master’s student at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), a big stepping stone toward a brighter future. I spent my first year at UCAS learning Chinese language and coursework before I joined my research team at the Institute of Geochemistry CAS. My stay at UCAS was an incredible time of my life. Chinese language and culture were prerequisites for my degree. The Chinese language makes me smarter and my life more entertaining. These courses helped me a lot to improve my language skills and to compete in professional life as well as student life. My seeing Chinese students going to classes early in the morning was an enjoyable moment. I learnt from them that early risers enjoys their life.UCAS is the name of nature (as well as Nature Index), which provides all research facilities with a clean environment and many more. UCAS enabled me to enjoy life through friendship, literature, intelligence, and technology. And for a nation as a whole, education sharpens a nation's hard, soft, and meta-skills to achieve a sustainable economy. That's why China is going through the way of a great nation. Looking and observing keenly, I know that UCAS has played a key role in science and technology for the last few years. I joined my research group in July 2020 at the Institute of Geochemistry CAS. It was really exciting to meet my professor Xiao Baohua for the first time on that Monday morning.  My senior was also there during the meeting. Then we had a regular meeting weekly, and this meeting was a turning point and milestone for my research. The meeting was not just about asking questions but also motivating us for innovation. When I discussed my research article with my professor, he just said that Research means “thinking about thinking”. Be a professional writer! Once you have successfully published your novel work, other researchers will happily read your work, and that will be your uniqueness. Without a doubt, these were crucial factors for making me a professional in my research. All these motivations allow me to express my ideas productively. In the end, he mentioned that one could become successful if one remains consistent with one’s work. In terms of science and technology in UCAS, there are multiple platforms available where you can learn about a particular thing. This process will definitely make you a good researcher because practice makes  perfect. I could feel that motivation in the process of learning and acquiring skills, values, morals, beliefs, and personal development.Morality, upbringing, ,quality, etc. make up a culture. Culture is the identity of an individual or nation, and China provides her culture and language to us. Language plays an important role in cross-culture communication. The central point is not culture but the imbalance in man’s personality. I have been with my Professor for the last three years. He often teaches me the principle of Chinese culture. In my eyes, he is a kind and traditional Chinese man full of wisdom. I am so fortunate to have such a kind Professor. I deeply enjoyed close and friendly relations with my Professor and Chinese friends.Aside from that, I went out to get knowledge from different places, including Beijing for the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, Xi’an for the Terracotta Warriors and Horsesi, Guizhou, Xinjiang for its unique natural beauty, etc. In China, It's very important to do some homework before visiting a great cultural spot. During my visit to Terracotta Army (Terracotta Warriors and Horses), I was impressed by the work of Qin dynasty, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also known to many as one of the eight wonders in the world. As the old and well-known saying goes, "If you want to know more about China well, you should go to Terracotta Warriors and Horses to feel something splendid". My experience at the Great Wall will also stick with me forever. As a proverb goes, "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man." To be a "Hero", I faced the scorching sun and arrived at the Great Wall's lofty. It struck me that Chinese culture has a long history and has been splendid for over 5000 years.Success takes many forms. But a person is truly successful when he begins to contribute to the society. To be more specific, I propose a new definition of success: Success is the satisfaction and excitement that people get when they do something they really want to do. Life is not a race. Rather, it’s a playground to radiate your uniqueness.Education is not negligible for every human being. China plays an important role in providing practical assistance to international students worldwide. Gratitude comes from the heart and urges to give back. Thanks to my teachers for their rich teaching experience and persuasive teaching methods have allowed me to make a huge leap in my grade and finally got a PhD admission under ANSO (Alliance of International Science Organizations). Now, I can continue to work hard and win glory for UCAS. Finally, I would like to thank China for the care, unwavering love, assistance, resources, and so many others provided to international students like me. A special thanks goes to Professor Xiao Baohua, UCAS, CAS, BRI, ANSO, Institute of Geochemistry, and International College for helping me, and I hope that China will be prosperous and move forward step by step.

On September 10th, 2022, Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival as well as Teachers’ Day was celebrated as a double festivals day. Associate Professor Cao Zhihong(曹志红), teacher of ‘China Panorama’ course at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), China led a joint activity done by Chinese and international students of UCAS to appreciate and understand the Chinese traditions. Students on this day recited poems related to the Moon, shared some knowledge about the Mid-autumn (moon cake) festival, valued the culture via dancing and singing, and sent paired blessings for a Mid-Autumn Festival and for Teachers’ Day. Teachers and students had a great and memorable time on this day.

Traditional Festivals in the Eyes of International Students ——中秋节
Traditional Festivals in the Eyes of International Students ——中秋节
by admin - Sep 10, 2022

Those people do not have knowledge about Mid-Autumn Festival, so they do not feel the real taste of Chinese culture, which has a long history. Culture is created by language. Ancient Chinese culture was similar to the present one, but they just changed the traditional Chinese characters(繁体字) into simplified Chinese characters(简体字). This term has given us another view of culture and activity. When we have activity-based learning, it becomes outcome-based one. Here, I provide an example: writing and speaking are activities when learning Chinese language; reading is also an activity, but it is only a part of learning.    Similarly, when we want to learn about a new culture, we need an environment, and then we participate in cultural activities to learn and adjust ourselves. It’s good that China has its inclusive culture, and everyone will feel very comfortable with it once following it. A society can’t thrive if it attaches itself strongly to only its own culture and shuts doors to other cultures. But the good thing is that China, especially UCAS, provides a friendly environment to participate in Chinese cultural activities and share various culture with national and international students. Such activities give us many opportunities, regarding social gatherings and so.    In advance, telling this to Newcomers, I strongly suggest to all of you to actively participate in different activities in UCAS, especially pay attention to compulsory courses very helpful for learning Chinese language and culture. Everyone will easily understand the importance of language, culture, and the environment. And it will become essential and helpful for everyone during their stay in China. In the current world, UCAS also taught how Newcomers would fit into their culture. And we all have a common desire to learn about Chinese traditional culture. At UCAS, International Students spend much of their time and energy in activities concerning Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese New Year, and many others. Those activities give us more spirit and provide a friendly environment to improve our understanding of Chinese language and culture very well. The mid-autumn festival is here; we should learn more about it.    Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节 zhōng qiū jié) is also called the Moon Cake Festival or the Moon Festival. We all have an impression of the this traditional festival, but we may know less about it. The Origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival    Only a few people can tell the source of it. The Mid-Autumn Festival originated over 3000 years ago. It was popularized during the Han dynasty(汉朝). Mid-Autumn Festival has a long historywith various autumn seasonal customs, most of which have ancient origins.    The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in Chinese lunar calendar. But in the Gregorian calendar, the date of the Mid-Autumn Festival changes every year, usually distributed between the early September and earlyOctober.    Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated in many Asian countries, but in China, it is the second most important Chinese festival after the Chinese New Year. Chinese people have a three-day holiday for this.Mid-Autumn Festival Activates and Significance     Mid-Autumn Festival probably began as a harvest festival. Worshiping the moon has gradually evolved into activities like watching and singing about the moon as one of folk festivals' significant rituals and customs. The full moon symbolizes the reunion of people, comforting those who miss their hometowns and their loved ones. There are many customs and forms of the Mid-Autumn Festival, but the most influential one is probably, "Chang'e flying to the moon(嫦娥奔月 Cháng É bēnyuè) ", a myth and legend in ancient China.    The story of "Chang'e flying to the Moon" tells us that no matter what we do, we must care about others, and only such a family will be full of justice. It symbolizes the yearning for a lovely reunion and a happy life shared by everyone. It is a living representation of realities inside the individual's mind.        In Chinese, there is also another activity called hanging up lanterns (竖中秋 shù zhōng qiū). According to Chinese culture, the higher the lanterns are hung, the better luck they can bring.    Eating moon cakes are also another significant activities. Everyone must try it to enjoy the real taste of the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to legend, rebels led by Zhu Yuan Zhang secreted messages in moon cakes to plot the overthrow of the Mongolian-founded Yuan dynasty during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Therefore, the Han people also celebrate the overthrow of the Mongolians at the Mid-Autumn Festival. As a tribute to this occasion, moon cakes are still eaten today.    There are three main ways of celeberating Mid-Autumn Festival.    Happy Mid-Autumn Festival |中秋节快乐 | zhōng qiū jié kuài lè.    Happy Moon cake Festival | 月饼节快乐 | yuè bǐng jié kuài lè.    Happy Moon Festival | 月亮节快乐 | yuè liàng jié kuài lè.Author InfoMuhammad Adnan, PhD student, 2022 ANSOState Key Laboratory of Environmental GeochemistryInstitute of Geochemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences IGCASUniversity of Chinese Academy of Sciences UCAS

Frank Kulwa, the student representative of the International College UCAS attend the 6th China-Africa Youth Festival
Frank Kulwa, the student representative of the International College UCAS attend the 6th China-Africa Youth Festival
by admin - Nov 16, 2021

As a new PhD student at UCAS, I was so honored to be nominated by the international college to represent UCAS at the 6th China-African Youth Festival which was held in the China Soong Ching Ling Science & Culture Center for young people, in Beijing from 18th October 2021 to 22nd October 2021. It included about 47 African youths and more than 30 Chinese youths.  The festival was filled with very fascinating events to make our days better and cultivate the main goal of the festival. Which was “to revisit the CPC’s movement on developing China and strengthen the China-Africa relationship”. My burning desire of what would happen within the five days of the event was quenched by a warmly welcoming dinner on the arrival day, followed by a small game Blind porker game to enable all participants interact with each other. The following days were filled with well-organized events and visits to very memorable and educative places in Beijing. This included round table meeting between African and Chinese youths to discuss about China-Africa relationship, had the unique opportunity to learn beautiful Chinese culture such as Beijing Opera which was introduced to us by the Dan, Old way of binding Chinese books using rope and learning how to write shufa (书法). The most captivating visit was to the Yanqing Winter Olympic Training base where we experienced hard work and intensive preparation of Chinese for the coming Olympic winter competition in Feb 2022. It was the first time for me to step in the skating ground, it was funny and a unique experience for sure. I couldn’t walk with the skating shoes on the ground, in the beginning we were just felling down like crippled, eventually we managed to walk but when holding small chairs.  The fourth day was a remarkable journey to Lipao village, it was a big lesson for us African youths to experience how Lipao people managed to change their lives only by cultivating and selling apples. It is through dedication and hard work, they have built good apartments for themselves through selling apples, now they have shifted from traditional to modern and greenhouse farming. I can say they are rich people on their own way and self-satisfactory on their needs. As African youths, we saw an example to copy so as to utilize well the natural and good fertile African soils for developing our continent, the way Lipao did.  Our visit to the Huawei Exhibition Beijing Center opened our eyes on the cutting-edge Huawei technology especially in education and automatic driverless car system. The invention of smart boards which are imbedded with AI will totally change the delivery of education, and ease the teaching job for teachers. It supports direct hand writing on the board, drawing figures and cleaning using the bare hand. Strange enough it can change the hand written words to computer alphanumeric characters fonts. When fully implemented It will totally eradicate the use of chalks in teaching. Moreover, we visited the Communist Part of China (CPC) museum to experience the struggle and success of the CPC. It so educative visit, where among other things we saw the original sample of sand from the moon, and the model of the satellite at its full size.  We real learnt fundamental matters to strengthen China – Africa relationship, the effort done by CPC to shift China from a poor to a very high industrial and economical country.  Generally, I can say “When you speak about China development, you speak about CPC”.Frank (a UCAS representative) sharing his views on the argument “Which global issue should be handled first between unemployment and climate change?” this was among the introductory events to remind ourselves about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  It was very captive to engage, interact and get familiar to each other on the first day of the event. We enjoyed the Beijing opera show on the open ceremony dayIn Opera cultural actions, we learnt self-defense using the arrows. The trainer is the Dan (The woman with strict moral code) in white top dressFrank with other African youths at the Status of the Great Chinese leaders (In CPC museum) who are the initiators of the political and economic stability of China. Mao Zedong at the middle and othersFrank at the modern apple farms at  Lipao village, Badaling Town, Yangqing District, Beijing. The visit to Lipao was a transformation of our minds to embrace the land, use it with dedication to feed others and develop ourselves through farming.Frank together with other youths eating and enjoying after visiting the farms at Lipao village. It was out time to taste the delicious apples from Lipao Farms.Frank (in the middle) learning Shufa (书法 ) writing from Chinese youth. It was good experience and joyful moment to learn and be happy together with Chinese youth.Frank on the left bottom photo sharing his opinion on “What have African youths learnt from CPC movements in developing China and how they can transform this to Africa? “. In the conference at the Soong Ching Ling’s former residence. The right bottom photo is Frank with the former ambassador of Tanzania miss Wang Ke, soon after the conference. On the last day we paid our visit to the Soong Ching Ling’s former residence.  We were introduced to the great sacrifices Madam Soong Ching Ling did for China, her love to children and strengthening international relationship. Lastly, we were given such a great respect of attending the conference at that memorial residence. We had an opportunity to meet and discuss with the former ambassador of China in Tanzania miss Wang Ke and other leaders Written by: Frank Kulwa Nkulila.
