The 2023 Winter School on Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences for International Students at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (the Winter School) is an international education and innovative training program jointly funded by the International College of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (IC-UCAS), the Chinese Academy of Sciences - the Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (CAS-ANSO), and the UNESCO Category 2 Center - International Centre for Theoretical Physics Asia-Pacific (ICTP-AP). The Winter School is open to both Chinese and international students of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. It emphasizes targeted and interdisciplinary approaches in specific professional directions, as well as the fusion of scientific research and education at a deep level. The University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is actively promoting a high-quality education model characterized by the fusion of scientific research and teaching, working together with CAS institutes and other schools and departments to build itself into a world-class university. The International College serves as the main base for the international education and training of students at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its goal is to leverage the scientific and educational resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, accelerate the internationalization of both the UCAS and CAS, create a diverse international academic atmosphere, and promote the development of education for international students in China. The International College, with its educational philosophy based on being “international, open, comprehensive, and forward-looking”, strives to establish itself as a distinctive, integrated, and internationally renowned institution in line with the principle of “co-ownership, co-governance, shared benefits, and mutual development.”The Winter School will be jointly organized by the Kunming Institute of Botany, the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, and the Kunming Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is scheduled to take place in Yunnan from January 14th to January 20th, 2024. This Winter School aims to bring together high-level teaching staff from relevant CAS institutes to teach students the cutting-edge research hotspots and theoretical approaches in disciplines such as botany, zoology, ecology, microbiology, environmental science, biochemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, bioinformatics, genetics, and cell biology. Meanwhile, a national condition education workshop for international education management staff from UCAS educational units (CAS institutes, schools and departments) will be conducted during the Winter School. Detailed information on enrollment matters for the Winter School is provided below:I. Eligibility CriteriaOutstanding senior international students currently studying at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and outstanding senior Chinese students from CAS institutes in Yunnan are eligible to apply.II. Application ProcedureApplication Period: Registration is open from now until December 31, 2023.1.    Log in to the website https://ic-en.ucas.ac.cn/form/187 to register.2.    Complete the attached 2023 Winter School Application Form for International Students.3.    Print the application form and obtain the signature and approval of your supervisor.4.    Submit the signed form to the department responsible for student education in your educational unit (CAS institutes, schools or departments) for approval.The education department of the educational units will inform the International College by email of the approved students’ names and student IDs by the end of January 4th. In addition, education management personnels in charge are requested to submit the personal information of the teachers for unified arrangements by the working group.III. Enrollment Quota60 individualsIV. Admission and FundingThe departments responsible for student education in each educational unit (CAS institutes, schools and departments) will conduct preliminary screening and review of applicants, and decide whether to admit and provide funding to the enrolled students.(Note: Taking into consideration the specific circumstances of the organizer and the quota restrictions of the Winter School, the research institute or department and the International College will confirm the quota together before informing the students of the admission) The funding includes: the organizer of the Winter School will cover all formal students’ miscellaneous fees and provide teaching materials; each educational unit (CAS institutes, schools and departments) will fund accommodation during registration and classes (from the evening of January 14th to 2:00 pm on January 20th) and reimburse round-trip travel expenses from the home city to the Winter School location and inter-city transportation expenses during the winter school period (transportation method determined by each educational unit).V. The First International Dragon Boat Race at Yanqi Lake, organized by the International College of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese-Foreign Civilization and Culture Exchange Center of International College in UCAS, kicked off on June 17, 2023, at 8 a.m. 17 teams from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, comprising both Chinese and foreign participants, gathered by the shores of Yanqi Lake to compete in the dragon boat race, showcasing the passion and charm of this traditional Chinese sport. The beautiful scenery of Yanqi Lake once again became the stage for cultural exchange between China and the world.奋楫争先迎端午, 2023年6月17日8时,由国科大国际学院,中外文明文化交流中心主办的首届龙入栖湖·中外龙舟赛鸣锣开场。国科大17支中外籍参赛队伍汇聚雁栖湖畔,以赛会友,共同享受赛龙舟这项中华民族传统竞技运动的激情与魅力,雁栖湖畔的美丽景色再次成为了中外文化交流的舞台。Dragon Boat龙舟The Yanqi Lake Campus of the UCAS boasts unique advantages for hosting dragon boat races. Located adjacent to the campus is picturesque mountains and a serene lake, where the reflection of the Great Wall can be seen on the water's surface. The shimmering lake presents a beautiful and poetic scene. The campus is situated in Huairou District, which is surrounded by distant mountains and embraces the Huairou National Comprehensive Science Center. It serves as a nurturing ground for scientific research and innovation. Students from various countries come together at this campus, fostering cultural exchange and mutual learning. In the early morning, students gradually entered the park. The Dragon Boat Festival Carnival, "Enjoying Zongzi from All Corners of China," featured activities such as archery, zongzi fishing, and knowledge quizzes. International students dressed in Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) participated in archery, while their fellow students from the School of Future Technology focused on catching zongzi. He emphasized that the dragon boat race not only relies on collective cooperation and personal perseverance but also encompasses scientific ingenuity. IC-UCAS and the Chinese-Foreign Civilization and Culture Exchange Center of International College in UCAS have brought this ancient sport to Yanqi Lake, a place of great significance for China's international exchanges. It has been given a new mission to serve as a medium for cultural exchange, collision, and integration between China and the world. The 17 participating teams represent different cultures, backgrounds, and fields of knowledge. Their competition represents the intertwining of science, physical fitness, and diverse civilizations. This competition will serve as a bridge connecting Chinese and foreign civilizations, promoting students' comprehensive development and deepening their global perspectives. Also, this competition will embody the spirit of "cultivating the body while cultivating the mind." In the end, the teams "Fe2O3"from School of Chemical Engineering, "Champion of Paddling," from School of Cyber Security and "Exuding Excellence" from College of Advanced Agriculture Sciences secured the first, second, and third places respectively. In the interview, he expressed he now understands the Dragon Boat Festival, including the poet Qu Yuan, and mentioned the importance of early preparation for the competition. Gan Zhaowang, a student from the champion team "Fe2O3," attributed their outstanding performance to previous training and teamwork. He mentioned that one of their teammates had previous experience as a main paddler in the university team, who shared their technical knowledge and even conducted demonstrations using chairs and shovels in the classroom. The team's unity and mutual encouragement played a significant role as well. He proudly said, "We encouraged each other even when we were exhausted in the finals, and we believed we could be champions. The 5-day long 2023 Spring School on Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences for the Overseas Students in IC-UCAS, funded by the International College of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and the Alliance of International Science Organizations under the Belt and Road Initiative (ANSO) Scholarship Program and hosted by the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) and International Centre for Theoretical Physics Asia-Pacific(ICTP-AP) has been successfully concluded on May 19th. This event focused on the integration of science and education, emphasizing interdisciplinary research and cultural exchanges. It attracted over 40 international students from more than ten countries and various disciplines, who actively participated in the program.       Cross-disciplinaryThe expert team for the Spring School consists of senior scientists and young scientists fromHIAS. Academic lectures given by distinguished professors covered multiple fields, including physics optoelectronics, life and health, and ecological environment, which emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary academic exchanges, reflecting multidisciplinary development of HIAS and its efforts in exploring and promoting cross-disciplinary studies.Professor Dai Ning from the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering delivered a lecture titled "Matter, Numbers, and Mathematics," which explored the importance of numbers in our lives and modern science from the perspectives of mathematics and physics. The lecture combined natural sciences and theoretical research. Professor Chen Luonan from the School of Life and Health Sciences presented a report on "Dynamics-based Data Science and AI," showcasing research progress in interdisciplinary fields such as bioinformatics, molecular systems biology, and AI learning. The report sparked students' interest in cross-disciplinary research. Associate Professor Li Lingxiangyu from the School of Environment, drawing upon her research experience in the environmental processes of nao pollutants and health risks, delivered a lecture titled "What, where, and why are nano pollutants in the environment?" The lecture explored the sources, environmental behaviors, transformations, and biological effects of nano pollutants, highlighting the interdisciplinary integration of environmental science with physics, biology, and chemistry. In addition, Professor YueMin from the School of Life and Health Sciences, Associate Professor Yang Xuezong from the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineeringand Associate Professor Jin Rong from the School of Environment shared their cutting-edge research achievements in their respective fields through presentations titled "A moving target for zoonotic transmission," "Advanced sodium guide star lasers based on Raman conversion," and "The risk of POPs—Even the white bear cannot escape from"respectively.Reports on Physics Optoelectronics, Life and Health, and Ecological Environment(From left to right, top to bottom: Dai Ning, Chen Luonan, Yang Xuezong, Le Min, Li Lingxiangyu, Jin Rong)International students delved into the research hotspots of various fields, gaining a deep understanding of interdisciplinary knowledge structures. As part of the activities, laboratory visits were arranged for the overseas students in particular, namely, the Taiji Laboratory, Environmental Laboratory, and Systems Health Laboratory, which allowed the students to experience the unique features and charm of different disciplinary platforms on site. Laboratory visitingCultural integrationCultural diversity is the inexhaustible driving force for human progress, and the exchange and mutual learning of different civilizations are the common aspirations for people from all countries. The Spring School has also organized several cultural exchange activities as a bridge for mutual cultural understanding and appreciation.Researcher Wang Ningyuan from the Zhejiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology delivered a presentation titled "New Discoveries and Research on the Liangzhu Ancient City." From the perspectives of water conservancy systems, altars and aristocratic tombs, jade civilization, and developed agricultural handicrafts, Professor Wang talked about the connotations of the Liangzhu civilization and elaborated on its significant importance of early world civilizations and Chinese civilization. Professor Fra, an Italian professor at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, gave a lecture titled "Chinese Music in a Cross-cultural Context: Reflections and Perspectives in a Transnational World." He shared how immigrants from Wenzhou, China, spread traditional Chinese music in Milan and Amsterdam and integrated Western instruments into the traditional Chinese music form called "Wenzhou Drumming and Chanting." The lecture delved into the development of Chinese music in a cross-cultural context. Professor An Rongquan, a member of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government Decision-making Advisory Committee, presented a comprehensive overview of Hangzhou's cultural heritage, innovative capacity, and overall development. He explored the historical significance of Hangzhou as a city, its influence on the process of Chinese civilization, the city's spiritual characteristics, and its impact on the world. Through this in-depth analysis, international students gained a deeper understanding of Hangzhou. They realized that Hangzhou is a modern, open, and vibrant city rooted in cultural prosperity, driven by innovation, and continuously moving towards the future.Through these lectures, students have the opportunity to delve into  Chinese culture and learn about Hangzhou’s unique culture. In the process of cross-cultural exchange, they gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of different cultures in learning and understanding.Series of Lectures on Chinese CultureFrom left to right: Wang Ningyuan, Fra, An RongquanCultural experienceIn order to provide international students with an immersive experience in Hangzhou's culture and to let them feel the spirit of the 19th Asian Games, the Spring School alsoplanned a series of field trips. Students visited the Liangzhu Museum, which is rich in prehistoric cultural heritage, and closely watched the modern facilities of the Huanglong Sports Center, one of the venues for the 19th Asian Games, and participate in cultural exchange activities related to the event. These activities not only provided students with the opportunity to experience and appreciate the charm of Hangzhou's culture but also offered volunteers a platform for practical learning and personal development. Practice is the best form of education, and through these experiences, students not only forged international friendships but also deepened their understanding of Hangzhou's culture and the spirit of the Asian Games.Visiting the Liangzhu Museum and Huanglong Sports CenterWorshop on the Education of Chinese National Conditions for University Administration StaffThis spring school is simultaneously conducting a national education study course for administration staffs in CAS institutes, which is designed to expand the knowledge horizons of administration staffs, enhance national education awareness, and improve the management skills and overall quality of administration staffs in CAS institutes. Through the content and practical sessions, education officials will gain an in-depth understanding of China's history, culture and current social development, strengthen their ability to communicate and cooperate with international students and explore effective educational management strategies. The five-day workshop covers English communication skills enhancement salon, international student education management experience exchange, national education experience exchange, lectures on Hangzhou's local geography and customs, Hangzhou culture practice course and Asian Games theme practice course.The national study course for administration staffs will help improve their education management ability, and promote international education development in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. By expanding the international perspective, administration staffs can better understand and respond to the needs of students from different cultural backgrounds and provide a more inclusive and diverse educational environment. At the same time, deepening local characteristics and practices will enable administration staffs to better understand local culture and social development, better integrate into the local environment, and provide students with education and teaching close to reality. This will further promote innovation and enhancement of education, improve the quality of education, and cultivate outstanding talents with international competitiveness and comprehensive quality.At the opening ceremony of the spring school, Wang Tangrong, Director of the Education Division of the Institute of Urban Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed the banner of the study course to HIAS on behalf of the previous course organizer.Clash of viewpointsDuring the roundtable discussion among Chinese and international students, three international students and three volunteers from the HIAS engaged in a retrospective and exploration of the cultural integration and interaction during the activities. Drawing from their diverse cultural backgrounds, they discussed the importance and challenges of cross-cultural learning. When discussing their academic experiences, they highlighted the frequent need to draw upon knowledge from other disciplines to solve problems within their own fields, emphasizing the necessity and value of interdisciplinary research. They also shared how their respective traditional cultures and literary arts provided inspiration and assistance in their scientific research and studies. This discussion not only showcased the criticality of cross-cultural exchange but also enhanced their global perspectives, broadened their cognitive boundaries, and strengthened their abilities to understand each other.Roundtable Discussion and International Student Friendship SalonThe successful organization of this Spring School event is of great significance in promoting the internationalization of HIAS as well as enhancing its influence. Zheng Chonghui, the Vice Executive President of HIAS, stated that "the Spring School is a vivid manifestation of our educational philosophy and a significant attempt to promote the integration of science and education, expand international perspectives, and strengthen international education. We will continue our efforts to advance the internationalization of HIAS and create a more diversed international academic atmosphere in HIAS."Certificate of CompletionClosing CeremonyThe Spring School for International Students in Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences is an innovative program for international students funded by the International College of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO) Scholarship Program, and is open to all UCAS students. Notice on online Registration of 2022 Autumn SemesterDear international students,The online registration system will go live on Aug.18th, 2022(Beijing time). For new students who are currently outside of China, or whose host institute are outside Beijing , or who are now in a middle- or high-risk area of China, you are required to complete online registration on August 18th — August 24th,2022. Boatmen of river Buriganga are regarded as the witness of time with a small paid for their livelihood by sailing the boat.
