Traditional Chinese Incense Culture Experience: International Students Immerse in the Art of Incense

6月伊始，中国科学院大学国际学院举办了一场别开生面的中国传统篆香体验活动，旨在帮助国际学生深入了解并亲身体验中国传统香道文化和篆香艺术。此次活动不仅让留学生掌握了篆香的基本知识和技能，更使他们在亲身体验中感受到中国传统文化的独特魅力，激发了他们进一步探索和学习的兴趣，同时也促进了中外文化交流，增进了留学生对中国传统文化的认同和了解，丰富了他们的文化生活，提高了文化素养。

On beginning of June 3, 2024, the International College of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences held a unique Chinese traditional incense experience event. The event aimed to help international students gain an in-depth understanding and hands-on experience of traditional Chinese incense culture and the art of Chinese incense. This event not only equipped the students with basic knowledge and skills of incense making but also allowed them to feel the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture, sparking their interest in further exploration and learning. Additionally, it promoted cultural exchange between China and other countries, enhancing the students' appreciation and recognition of Chinese traditional culture, enriching their cultural life, and improving their cultural literacy.

Background of the Event

篆香文化是中国传统文化的重要组成部分，具有悠久的历史和深厚的文化底蕴。为了让国际学生能够更好地了解这一文化瑰宝，国际学院特别策划了此次篆香体验活动，邀请了专业的篆香老师全程指导，活动参与者为20至30名国际学生，活动地点设在中国科学院大学玉泉路校区人文楼教室132。

Incense culture is an important part of traditional Chinese culture, with a long history and profound cultural heritage. To help international students better understand this cultural treasure, the International College specially planned this incense experience event, inviting professional incense teachers to provide full guidance. The event was attended by 34 international students and took place in Classroom 211 of the Teaching Building at the Yuquan Road Campus of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

活动流程

Event Process

活动在一片热烈的气氛中拉开帷幕。首先，教师向学生们全面介绍了篆香文化及其悠久的历史，包括篆香的定义、起源和发展历程，并讲解了篆香图案的设计及其背后的文化意义、篆香的功能和作用，以及常用的香料种类。通过这部分内容，学生们建立了对中国篆香文化的基本认知。

The event began in a lively atmosphere. First, the teacher Kong Yanyan gave a comprehensive introduction to the culture and history of incense, including its definition, origin, and development. The teacher also explained the design and cultural significance of incense patterns, the functions and uses of incense, and the common types of incense materials. This part helped students build a basic understanding of traditional Chinese incense culture.

       接下来，教师展示并详细说明了篆香的制作工具和材料，包括篆香模具、香粉、香灰等。随后，教师逐步指导学生进行篆香的制作，从如何放置香粉到使用模具压制图案，确保每个学生都能亲自动手操作，体验篆香制作的完整过程。

Next, the teacher  Kong demonstrated and explained in detail the tools and materials used in incense making, including incense molds, incense powder, and incense ash. She then guided the students step by step in making incense, from placing the incense powder to pressing the patterns with molds, ensuring that each student could personally participate in the process and experience the complete process of incense making.

在篆香制作完成后，教师指导学生们亲自点燃自己制作的篆香，感受香气弥漫的氛围，并进行闻香品鉴。通过理论讲解与实践操作相结合的方式，学生们深入理解和欣赏了中国篆香文化的独特魅力，体验到了其中蕴含的宁静与雅致。

After completing the incense making, the teacher guided the students to light their own made incense, allowing them to experience the atmosphere filled with fragrance and conduct incense appreciation. Through a combination of theoretical explanation and practical operation, students deeply understood and appreciated the unique charm of traditional Chinese incense culture, experiencing the tranquility and elegance it embodies.

本次篆香文化体验活动取得了巨大成功，不仅让国际学生深刻体验和理解了中国传统篆香文化，也在他们心中播下了探索和热爱中国传统文化的种子。国际学院将持续推动此类文化体验活动的举办，以促进中外文化的交流与互鉴，丰富国际学生的文化体验，提升全球文化理解与尊重。

The recent incense culture experience event was a great success, allowing international students to deeply experience and understand the traditional Chinese art of incense making. This event also planted the seeds of exploration and love for traditional Chinese culture in their hearts. The International College will continue to promote such cultural experience activities to foster cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and other countries, enrich the cultural experiences of international students, and enhance global cultural understanding and respect.
