On November 5, 2024, 25 international students from the International College of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences attending "Global Environment Outlook" course visited the "Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility", a national key scientific and technological infrastructure in China. With professional explanations and visual results presentations, professors from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences introduced the Earth system model research and the facility development, as well as the scientific research and application of this facility to address the environmental crises, such as climate change and air pollution, to the 25  students.

The "Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility", also known as EarthLab, is the first specialized simulation facility in China with independent intellectual property rights, focusing on numerical simulation software for the interactions among Earth’s five spheres. EarthLab is equipped with a multitude of capabilities, including the ability to simulate and extrapolate the Earth system, as well as predict and forecast the climate, environment, ecology etc.

Since the 1990s, the United Nations Environment Programme has organized a series of Global Environment Outlook reports, which have comprehensively assessed global and regional environmental issues. The Global Environment Outlook course is based on the sixth Global Environment Outlook report and regional reports, focusing on the global environmental status and trends, driving factors, policy responses and environmental governance, and the latest progress and future development directions. During the fall semester of the 2024-2025 academic year, the course welcomed 25 international students from 11 different countries. After completing one year of intensive studies at the International College, they will return to 18 CAS research institutes and Colleges of UCAS to continue their research and academic pursuits.
