On the evening of December 5, 2025, the choir competition commemorating the 90th anniversary of the December 9th Movement was held at the East Auditorium of Yanqi Lake Campus, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). More than 60 international students from the International College participated in the event. Their performance of My Motherland and I won the First Prize and received the highest score of the competition, 94.41 points.

The participating students came from a wide range of countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Mongolia, Iran, Algeria, Zambia, Egypt, Russia, Ghana, Togo, and Madagascar. Through the collective performance of a classic Chinese patriotic song, students from diverse cultural backgrounds demonstrated the inclusive and multicultural environment of the International College.

The performance adopted a multi-layered structure with several distinct sections. It opened with a Chinese poetry recitation by one male and one female student:

“We come from different parts of the world, yet we are nurtured by the same civilization.
Beneath the red walls of the Forbidden City, we listen to history;
through the speed of high-speed rail, we witness development and progress.
Today, our voices rise together like the sun.
Listen — this is our heartfelt tribute to our new home.
Sing — this is our shared response to a remarkable era.”

The recitation was followed by an English rendition of the first verse of My Motherland and I, performed through alternating solo lines and group chorus. The performance then transitioned into the Chinese version of the song. During the final two sections, sign language was incorporated into the chorus, adding a visual dimension to the stage presentation.

The program developed progressively in language, form, and emotional expression. The bilingual arrangement preserved the original spirit of the song while also reflecting the identities and experiences of international students, highlighting cultural exchange and shared participation among young people from different countries.

During the preparation period, students devoted substantial time and effort to rehearsals. Despite cold weather and snowfall, participation remained consistently active, and many students organized additional practice sessions on their own after class. Some participants shared that the song and the rehearsal process helped them develop a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and contemporary Chinese society.

The award not only reflected the strong teamwork and commitment demonstrated by the students of the International College, but also highlighted the positive outcomes of intercultural exchange within UCAS’s international education environment. Through collective rehearsals and the joint performance of a classic Chinese song, students from different countries and cultural backgrounds strengthened mutual understanding while gaining deeper insight into Chinese culture and contemporary social development. Using music as a medium, the performance further promoted cultural interaction on campus and demonstrated the value of cross-cultural communication, shared emotional connection, and mutual growth among young people.
