From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on December 21, 2025, the International College of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), in collaboration with the environmental nonprofit organization Nature Guard, successfully organized an environmental hiking and clean-up activity along the Jingxi Ancient Trail in Beijing. With international students as the primary participants, the event, themed “Protecting Nature Through Action,” aimed to engage students from diverse cultural backgrounds in hands-on environmental protection and promote the practical application of sustainable development concepts.

A total of 56 volunteers participated in the activity, with international students making up a significant proportion of the group. The volunteers completed an 11.36-kilometer hike with a cumulative elevation gain of 165 meters, collecting 21.87 kilograms of waste along the trail. International students actively engaged throughout the activity, working closely with their Chinese volunteers and demonstrating a strong sense of environmental and social responsibility.

On the day of the event, international and Chinese volunteers traveled together by bus to the Jingxi Ancient Trail. During the journey, volunteers from Nature Guard delivered informative presentations on environmental protection, including the ecological impact of litter, the principles of “Leave No Trace,” and individual responsibilities in natural environments. Safety guidelines were also provided to help international students better understand outdoor environmental practices in China.

Upon arrival, participants were organized into groups and provided with environmentally friendly garbage bags and protective gloves. Guided by Chinese volunteers, the clean-up hike began along designated routes. For many international students, the Jingxi Ancient Trail was not only a natural site but also a valuable opportunity to experience China’s history, culture, and ecological landscape firsthand.

During the hike, international worked side by side, collecting plastic waste, food packaging, and other litter while enjoying the surrounding natural scenery. Through close collaboration and mutual support, environmental awareness was translated into concrete action across cultures.

This activity was not only an environmental initiative but also a form of social engagement with a strong international dimension. By participating in environmental protection efforts in China, international students deepened their understanding of China’s approach to ecological conservation and experienced firsthand the shared global values underlying environmental protection.

Looking ahead, the International College of UCAS will continue to place international students at the center of its social practice initiatives, strengthening cooperation with public welfare organizations and promoting activities related to sustainability and social responsibility. Through these efforts, the College aims to support international students in developing global perspectives and becoming active contributors to a sustainable future.
