To promote the synergy between the CAS institutes for science research and education, the 2017 Winter School on Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences for Oversea Students was held by University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) during Jan 15 to Jan 19 at the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering,Chinese Academy of Sciences (IDSSE, CAS). 83 international students from 19 countries and 40 institutes gathered in IDSSE, and together experienced 5 brilliant days for studying and communications.
The opening ceremony of the winter school was held on the morning of Jan 15 in the lecture hall of IDSSE, CAS. DING Kang the President of IDSSE, ZHOU Yiming the Professor and vice president of academic degree evaluation committee, CHEN Feng the director of IC-UCAS general office with other administrative staffs of CAS, the education management leader of the IDSSE and all students attend the ceremony.
The winter school was the first project of the UCAS innovative education and cultivation program, applied by IDSSE human resource and education department, held successfully with strong support from the management. On the opening ceremony, DING Kang the head of IDSSE address in the first place. He welcomed all international students attending the winter school, and mentioned that IDSSE is a young institute in CAS. He hopes everyone to enjoy the beautiful view of IDSSE and at the same time can learn the latest knowledge. ZHOU Yiming and CHEN Feng gave their speech afterwards.

The topics of this winter school are geoscience, life science and information science. The winter school has specially invited 10 well known scientists to introduce the latest trends and research approaches in these fields. The courses are plentiful and the content of the courses covers Biology, Natural Hydrate, Geochemistry, Resource Development, Electronics and Communications. The atmosphere in the courses are very proactive and the international students has showed strong interest towards the deep sea research and had very active communications with the experts during and after the courses.

The winter school also organized a series of educational practice course, including watching the teaching video, engineering laboratory, Explorer I expedition boat and Deep Warrior manned submersible. These substantial and meaningful activities has broaden the scientific insights of the students also demonstrate the advantages of IDSSE on Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences.

Meanwhile, during the winter school the sessions for communication and training for educational and management staff between different institutes are also successfully arranged and organized. Experiences for international education management are shared on the sessions and even prepared training of common English scenario dialog for administrative staffs.
On Jan 19th, the closing ceremony was held at the beach next to the IDSSE, CAS. The students has showed their talents and received the certification of completion for winter school from administrative staffs.

This Winter School is one of the specific measures of UCAS’s science-education integration. CAS institutes are also able to strengthening their advantages of research and education through the platform of schools on Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences for Oversea Students. As the host institute of Winter School, IDSSE, CAS promoted its characteristics and enhanced its international education level, developed its education and cultivation practice on international students, accelerated its scientific-education development and laid the root for itself to became an R&D institute owns significant influence in in-depth science and engineering sector worldwide as well as education and public service center.
